Unusual Wedding Competition Winner

Karen Laird and Rhuari Blair recently won the Unusual Weddings Competition held with VisitScotland and You & Your Wedding Magazine. They married on the beautiful hills close to Glencoe Lochan,  "The ceremony was in the hills beside Glencoe Lochan and it was quite a clamber to reach, so we both had the foresight to wear hiking boots," says Rhuari. "However, no-one else had the same idea and some of them struggled in their heels!"

The couple held a humanist ceremony which included their own vows and two readings including Beautiful Cosmos by Ivor Cutler and lines from Orkney poet George Mackay Brown.

To incorporate Karen's Orkney heritage, Rhuari created a traditional Orkadian cog- a large handcrafted wooden bucket filled with a mixture of spirits and liquors "I made it in the morning and, without giving away the secret recipe, it included a bottle of 12-year-old Orkadian whisky, dark ale, sherry, rum and sugar,"

Karen and Rhuari were joined by more friends after the ceremony in the Snug Bar (a warm cosy bar with pine paneling and slate floors) at the award winning Clachaig Inn. After celebrating at the bar, 13 members of the party squeezed into the back of a friend's converted Transit Van and continued the fun.
